In his trademark suit of black armor and skull-like helm, armed with a demon-forged axe, Corvis Rebaine twice brought death and destruction to Imphallion—willingly slaughtering countless innocents in pursuit of a more just society. But that was the old Rebaine. Before he killed the mad warlord Audriss and banished the demon Khanda. Before he lost his wife and children, who could not forgive or forget his violent crimes.

Now, in a distant city, under a false name, Rebaine is loathe to resurrect his bloody ways, even when the neighboring nation of Cephira invades his beloved Imphallion. But when an imposter takes up the legendary armor and axe, and sets about killing more ruthlessly than Rebaine ever did, the old warrior may have no choice. Pursued by an old nemesis, a mysterious sorcerer, and his own vengeful daughter, Rebaine moves to clear his name, save his country, and reclaim his family. To accomplish these tasks, will he once again have to become the “Terror of the East”?

The Warlord Legacy Ari Marmell Books

A good read, with fully fleshed characters shown at their worst. The action is well written, and the dialogue is somewhat witty if a bit too dry. This is a book that has its characters act as people, rather than simply fulfilling archetypes. While the epilogue teases the reader with the possibility of another book, the small scraps of closure and possible redemption provided by this novel are enough to leave this reader satisfied.

If you like dark fantasy, this is the series for you.

The Warlord Legacy Ari Marmell Books Reviews

i found it really enjoyable but. what the heck happen to his wife? he suddenly kisses and loves another girl?? it makes me so angry lol. i hate when books do that. the conqueror shadow was about him and his wife, then suddenly he betrays her??
Corvis Rebaine is such a fantastic fantasy character. I really wish there was more to this series. What a great setting too. I love Marmell's work.
while still an enjoyable read, I kept waiting for the big fight between all the forces at play, rebaine, his demon, his daughter, her uncle, the cephirans, and sadly, what came was not the battle I was hoping for.

I enjoy the wit and sarcasm Marmell infuses his fantasy with; rather like a JV Joe Abercrombie. I like that there's not so much a 'good guy' or a 'bad guy' fighting 'evil minions' of a 'mad god,' 'despot king,' or 'nasty monster.' the only true 'monster' here is Davro, the cyclopean Ogre with a penchant for farming.

after 'the conqueror's shadow' I was hoping for more than 'on the road with grumpy old warlord' being pursued by bitter family members and a cranky former pendant.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the 3rd installment picks up the pace & action a bit.
This really excellent sequel to Marmell's The Conqueror's Shadow (which was also stonkingly good) had me turning the pages swiftly. Corvis Rebaine is one of the more interesting antiheroes to come along in a great while - heart's usually in the right place but willing to kill large numbers of people (with an excellent demon-forged sword) to achieve his goals.

Six years after TCS, Rebaine thought he had retired, but learns that someone wearing his old get-up is trying to re-conquer Imphallion. As the nobles and the guilds are still not up to the task of working together, he has to find old allies (who are being killed off at a fantastic rate) to meet the new threat.

Buy both books - you won't be sorry.
Every fantasy fan should give Ari Marmell's books a try. He has something in his writing and story telling that is very unique and relatively unusual in the Fantasy Genre, witty sarcasm and a strong sense of humor that runs through every bit of the book. That being said, his books are far from being a comedy or a parody of the genre, it's just obvious that Ari loves Fantasy and in his own work he wants to create something different. This book stands alone so you don't have to have read the Conquerers Shadow, but I would advise reading that one first, as it's nice to come back to the characters later in their life, and in general the first book is slightly better.

Similar to the first book, the main character is a former warlord who through his savage troops committed a mass genocide but came short to total victory when his plans fell through. In the present, he's now well past his prime, but still trying his best to change his country fir the better. He's a classic Anti-Hero. In The Warlord's Legacy, he shares the voice/view-point with a new character, someone I would call an Anti-Villain. At times he's really funny and relatively nice, but when he puts his companions to sleep he commits atrocities that make what Rebaine did look like child's play. Here is the main plot of this story, the new anti-villain Kaleb is performing these acts under the name and guise of Rebaine. That and a looming war bring the former conqueror out of hiding in the attempt to clear his already tarnished name.

My biggest problem with the story is that there's a lot of backtracking, with two main characters essentially looking for each other but always just missing, it get's to be an annoying goose chase. The story isn't as epic as the previous book, though it may be more personal as Rebaine's daughter is one of the people looking for him. She's an interesting character, and it's safe to assume she may be the main character in Ari Marmell's future books. However, at times her story of a girl with a lot of daddy issues feels a little forced and awkward. On the bright side though, there's a lot of potential depth that the character could evolve to fill in future books.

Overall, I just really enjoyed the book and would gladly recommend it to anyone looking for a good read.

My Rating 9/10
Well, properly speaking somebody in Rebaine's armor strikes back, but never mind that. This book is very much the equivalent of "The Empire Strikes Back" in what I hope is a trilogy from Ari Marmell.

The Warlord's Legacy is significantly darker than The Conqueror's Shadow. The first book set Corvis Rebaine on a quest that might have redeemed him from his past - you could even forget that he used to be the murderous Terror of the East. Six years later, that's no longer the case. Rebaine's lost any hope of earning forgiveness for his past, and with every hand turned against him it's all he can do just to survive. Watching him do so is a treat.

The story does sacrifice some of the epic scope from the first book, but it makes up for it with richer characters. There are few people in this book you can't sympathize with, or find utterly despicable; occasionally in the same scene.

Overall this is an excellent continuation of Rebaine's story, and I can't wait to see where it goes from here.
Excellent read. One of those books that is tough to put down.
I hope there are more to come, soon.
